The Week in Confederate Heritage
Penny Kimble/Denton Record-Chronicle A statue of a Confederate soldier is on display behind plexiglass in the Denton County Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum. Until it was removed in 2020, the statue stood on top of a memorial monument outside the courthouse for over a century. This week we look at this article from Texas. "The Confederate monument that was once located on the lawn of Denton County's historic courthouse is finally on display inside the Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum. The Denton County Commissioners Court unanimously approved a resolution to remove, clean and relocate a portion of the Denton County Confederate Soldier Memorial in June 2020.

The Tactics Boston Used Against Slave Catchers in the 1850’s Offer Lessons for Resisting ICE Deportations Now
I came across this substack post. "This past weekend, thousands of Americans took to the streets in cities across the country. In Minneapolis, Portland, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and New York, protesters carried signs reading 'Stop ICE Terror Now' and chanted 'ICE out now!' The catalyst: the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis on January 8th. Good was a wife and mother of three. The Department of Homeland Security claimed the agent acted in self-defense after Good allegedly 'weaponized her vehicle.' A day later, two more people were shot by Border Patrol agents in Portland under similar circumstances, with officials offering the same justification.

What a tell.

There are two explanations for these kinds of threats toward someone who is filming them: Either they know what they are doing is shameful and don’t want it publicized, or they are making assumptions about the cameraman‘s viewpoint, and are trying to silence him for political reasons.
I think it is probably a bad idea to put clearly unhinged, angry psychopaths in federal law enforcement positions.

🗃️ Time to rewrite immigration history with Native history in mind. The US was founded on the conquest, dispossession, removal, exploitation, or genocide of Native people. Denial of that fact generated counter-myths: empty land, waste land, Manifest Destiny—and the slogan “nation of immigrants.” 🧵1/7

American “Heritage” vs. American History | The Weekly Show with Jon Stewart
This is an excellent discussion between host Jon Stewart and his guests, Professor Allen C. Guelzo and Professor Joanne Freeman. The episode's description tells us, "As debates over what it means to be a "heritage American" enter mainstream political discourse, Jon is joined by University of Florida Professor Allen C. Guelzo and Yale historian Joanne Freeman, host of 'History Matters' podcast. Together, they examine what this loaded term actually means, explore how American identity has been defined and contested throughout the nation's history, and discuss the central role immigrants have always played in shaping who we are.

A useful reminder that Trump's administration wages war on one of the most dynamic sectors of the economy, renewable energy—the cheapest and most environmentally friendly new sources.
Trump is posting more photos of dead birds and wind turbines today.

In one photo he captioned “Eagles going down!”, it’s actually a photo of a red kite from 2010 in Spain.

The other photo is from 2006 in Taiwan.

Combined Operations in the Civil War
This book by Professor Rowena Reed looks at military operations in the Civil War that involved both army and naval forces acting in concert. Today we would call these joint operations, with the term combined operations referring to actions involving militaries from more than one country acting together. In this study she focuses on operations involving the United States Army and the United States Navy cooperating together. In explaining the organization of her book, Professor Reed writes, "Since this study examines both the strategic and tactical application of Federal combined operations, it is organized into three parts, corresponding to the different uses of combined forces at various stages of the war.
