Did a quick search. Looks like it's from Old English with a Proto-Germanic root, and in fact the "ass" form you use is derived from it rather than vice-versa or being entirely other.

Depends on where you are. In my country's dialect of English, the past tense is "shrank", following the same pattern as "drink - drank - drunk".
