Canadian MPs simply do not have phone calls with the leader of another party about their career, especially the prime minister. In my research, this typically occurs only when staff have arranged the call in order to finalize an agreement for the MP to join the caucus.

When I posted, the news story said that Jeneroux would sit as an Independent. They changed the headline to say he's resigning and now I cannot delete my original post! Yes things are moving fast... 🏃 (FYI, Rayes didn't see re-election in April, he's no longer an MP)

CORRECTION: The original story said he was going to sit as an Indpendent and has been changed to say he is resigning from Parliament entirely.

Correct -- now reports are that he is resigning his seat. Things move fast!

Having studied numerous cases of parliamentarians departing from cabinet and caucus in Canada, I cannot recall an instance in which a premier appeared alongside a departing minister at a news conference to announce the minister’s resignation and decision to sit as an Independent.
