💡 'Write less; Read more'

"Are pupils being read to enough in the school week? How much reading are they exposed to, and how do we know? Are we wading through too many comprehension questions that imitate national tests, but inhibit reading volume in English?"

Thorough & practical exploration of the role pictures can play in reading by Prof Tim Shanahan.

“Pictures may initially compete with the words in comprehension, but they’re essential for helping kids to gain coherent representations of what they read.”

A really interesting blog - and hypothesis - from @DTWillingham on why US education exam scores (NAEP) may have fallen.

For problems with so many causes, finding manageable 'best bets' is a helpful starting point.

Is AI the solution or part of the problem?

This contrast was thought-provoking…

The always excellent Professor Tim Shanahan on disciplinary literacy in elementary school [primary school]. Though specific DL practices emerge, lots of non-fiction reading & building of content knowledge in the curriculum with rich reading is key:

This is excellent - Wikipedia has compiled a great synthesis of examples to characterise the ‘Signs of AI Writing’

Great idea! I think one of the big - perhaps counterintuitive - aspects of the role is it is essential to foster independence. The nature of the role can quickly encourage dependence from students. Trying to scaffold students making their own choices is so key e.g. EEF scaffolding approach

Pleased to see Shareen Wilkinson’s ‘Disciplinary literacy in primary schools’ being published today.

I had the privilege of seeing a review copy and it offers a great range of practical strategies, useful case studies, and really helpful detail for specific primary subjects.

For primary school age students, this small study found that there was no difference reading texts on paper or digitally. Narratives were better understood than informational texts.

The Department for Education has published ‘The Writing Framework’.

It will be of interest for leaders & teachers in primary looking to improve writing standards and refine their practice (but it’ll be of interest to many secondary school colleagues too).

Interesting study interviewing Scottish headteachers about their use of Pupil Equity Funding (equivalent of the Pupil Premium in England).

It shares perspectives on evidence use, autonomy, and the influence of local networks:

‘Learning from errors: deliberate errors enhance learning’

Often a counterintuitive finding - errors and small failures are a crucial part of the learning process - we shouldn’t avoid them, but instead use them.

Great to hear from @susiefraser22 from Manchester Communication Academy about how their trust talks about ‘mitigating the impact of social disadvantage’ at the @rs_network summer conference.
