I feel awful when I one-star someone's first novel. It's hard to write a novel! Respect!

But I think more aspiring writers would benefit from the adage, "Your first novel is for your drawer. Your second is for an agent. Your third is for publication."

I didn't choose this as a Halloween read, but 'Make Me' happens to be the scariest book I've read this year. Lee Child could have made it as a horror writer.
