I was invited to give my thoughts on the current state of technology and also to put my neck on the line and make some bold predictions about what technological progress may bring in the year 2026 and beyond.

One thing I find interesting is how some people claim that the current manifestation of AI is merely a "fancy autocomplete".

It's like saying that music is merely "fancy noise".

“It is impossible to imagine the universe run by a wise, just and omnipotent God, but it is quite easy to imagine it run by a board of gods. If such a board actually exists it operates precisely like the board of a corporation that is losing money.”

For people who think AI is taking away jobs: I just read that there is a brand new job category called "AI sherpa". Wonder what's that all about.

To me, exceptions tend to operate like a gun silencer (suppressor). The gun goes off, maybe someone gets injured/killed, but no one hears anything because the shot got suppressed/silenced. It is only later, when the forensics arrive at the crime scene that the details emerge into light.

Today is lazy Sunday, so it's time for my controversial post. I will start with a hypothetical scenario. Suppose I am in the situation where some company offers me a job, but puts some choices in front me.

There are two categories of code:

1. Code that comprises a routine that contains some processing logic that runs entirely in the main memory

2. Code that comprises a routine that contains some processing logic that cannot run entirely in the main memory but depends on some other routine
December 14, 2025 at 6:44 PM
We don't know what might happen in a complex system (impossible to predict), and precisely because of that acknowledgement (i.e., knowing the unknown), we give up on attempting to fix the malfunctioning once it happens inside some routine.
December 14, 2025 at 6:26 PM
Exceptions are unavoidable (we call them defects), but the system must be designed to deal with them. Throwing and catching exceptions in the code that implements the affected component is the most primitive way of coping with defects.

Let's not conflate and confuse exceptions with bugs.
December 13, 2025 at 5:54 PM
To design a system that is robust, resilient, and performant without resorting to exception handling requires high degree of mastery and expertise. Some may deny that, but it's probably because the challenge is too high.
December 13, 2025 at 4:41 PM
When a routine violates its contract, that could happen for two reasons:

1. Faulty processing logic (i.e., a bug)

2. Glitch in the system (i.e., a hiccup caused by some malfunctioning that has nothing to do with the processing logic as encoded by programmers)
December 13, 2025 at 4:20 PM
I'm not sure I have a clear understanding why AI tends to glitch. One explanation is that it's down to so much garbage in the training data. Sounds plausible.

New information is dangerous, as it might cause someone to change their mind. New information can be rendered safe simply by declaring it to be invalid.

I am prone to trust the code that makes my tests pass and also kills all surviving mutants.

The emphasis is on "my tests".

If you've ever been involved in any project in the entertainment industry (e.g., producing movies, TV shows, music albums, musicals, etc.) you will have noticed that majority of the material that gets shot/recorded/taped ends up on the proverbial cutting floor.
