Generally, true, but in this case, what makes this one both very large and very high-quality is the tightness of its pores where the gills would be, combined with the general lack of nibbling by bugs. It’s firm, dry, and huge. Almost ideal.

On closer inspection and using PlantNet, it seems like these might be Bradford pear but I’m thinking they will work the same way as crab apples. Still going to take a sample and see how they hold up. Obv don’t want to decorate with something that will rot quickly
