A new report from Bellwether's Nora Weber & others confirms that national education news is losing its identity. But there's at least one viable alternative.

Like many journalists, former WAMU ed reporter
@jennyabamu.bsky.social had long resisted video-first content creation. But then she figured out a way to join in that worked -- and she's got ideas how others could, too:

Everyday classroom disruptions are pervasive and growing, says veteran educator Gail Johnson. But there's enormous resistance among parents and journalists about acknowledging the problem.

Coming tomorrow: THE LOST DECADE's Steven Wilson talks with me about misguided external forces that derailed high-achieving charter networks & 'feckless' reform leaders who failed to stand up. But will he name names (like I will)?

The best education journalism of the week was "Can $1,000 a month help more students land nursing careers?" by @rebeccaplevin.bsky.social Levin of the Los Angeles Times.

Other great stories we liked came from DMN, Hechinger, & CALMatters.

My favorite parts of this new David Zweig interview are his reflections on the reporting he wishes he'd done in Europe & his insights into the journalistic benefits of feeling like an outsider:

I understand the urge, but Blue Sky Starter Packs are pretty much the *opposite* of what I want journalists to be doing right now.

Find journalists who aren't in your bubble. Follow some parents, educators, & immigrants who voted for Trump anyway. Watch Rogan on schools or COVID lockdowns. Etc.

Who's the Joe Rogan of education — the nontraditional information-distributor who's become popular enough to influence journalists and newsmakers. Do we have one? Anyone close? No self-nominations.

To channel @jayrosen.bsky.social's stakes>horserace mantra, the key journalistic question isn't whether or Republicans can abolish the USDE or not but rather the question if and how students' lives would likely be affected.

It's a much more important question. I'd love to see more about that.

Can we watch them closely and hope to stop the incoming administration from doing crazy things, but not treat *everything* that they support and do as crazy?

Otherwise, I fear that journalism becomes a tool of the Democratic party and the groups rather than an independent endeavor.
