No, it's not. In defamation cases involving public figures you enjoy first amendment protection. Your words are only defamation if you say something which you know to be false, or speak "with reckless disregard for the truth". That means that what you say is presumed to be protected by the 1A.

Honestly they probably can't. UK defamation law is on the opposite end of the scale to American. If you can't prove beyond reasonable doubt that what you say is true, a very difficult bar to clear, it's slander, unlike in the US where you basically only have to show you could reasonably believe it
