While health information labels can still be found on some alcohol products, it is disappointing to see some producers remove the labels again to hide the facts from their customers in Ireland.

There is comprehensive evidence that shows extending opening hours leads to an increase in domestic violence (DV). There are also links between DV & big sporting events, with the associated increased alcohol consumption & highly charged nature of such events

Alcohol harm costs Ireland 2.5% of GDP annually - for 2024 that's around €14bn. Excise brings in only €1.2bn & as @simonharrisireland.bsky.social noted there has been no increase since 2014. Alcohol excise must be increased by at least 15% & linked to inflation

That so many different alcohol producers added health info labels to their products before it had become mandatory shows just how easily labelling can be done. Industry's issue isn't the label itself, it's the facts on the label. There can be no further delay to this vital public health legislation.

If banning sunbeds is a 'no-brainer' due to cancer risk, then another no-brainer is to stand firm & introduce alcohol health info labels. Alcohol causes 1,000 cancers a year. Labels allow people make informed decisions about drinking.

The Public Health (Alcohol) Act will struggle to achieve its stated aims as long as some important aspects of the Act are still not operational & others are being undermined by loopholes.

If the cost of alcohol harm was paid for from people’s personal taxes such as Income Tax, USC & PRSI, more than 34c per € paid by every taxpayer in Ireland would go to covering it. Govt must stop giving alcohol industry a free pass & increase excise duties

In the Public Health (Alcohol) Act, government already has the tools to reduce hospital trolley congestion by reducing alcohol consumption at a population level - all government needs to do now is stop deferring to industry & implement the legislation fully.
