My five Oak Eggar caterpillars are still chomping away on Bramble leaves but are starting to explore the confines of their Winter quarters. Despite last week’s cold snap they haven’t yet shown signs that they’re stopping eating. Further shed skins suggest they’re 4th instar now. #TeamMoth

There you go. Released already unfortunately.

Allegedly about 6-7C but with wind chill much colder. No LBAMs on the wing so I’m not expecting anything to be flying tbh. I think packing up in the morning will be just that. I’ll check the egg boxes and the surroundings of course.

2025 has been a bit of a strange one for flight times & I know I said I wasn’t trapping tonight but you know how it is….. Wogan avoided
Chrysodeixis chalcites.

Actually that’s a good point. Perhaps I’ll run an annual print out from my laptop and put it in the back of each year’s diary? Might make the contents more legible for someone else to read. If they’re interested? 🤔

Seems like a rain guard modification over the winter might be called for? With adequate protection your interior egg boxes can be kept dry even in the worst conditions. Definitely worth considering a little DIY project.

Anyone clever enough to put a name to any of these moths attracted to outside lights in Chobe, Botswana from a few years back?
Resorting to trawling unidentified moth photos now. 🤷‍♂️

With this one.

I misunderstood
We are taking the van but not that one.
This is our present one but it’s about to be replaced.

I didn’t think it was possible, as they would all be lifers for me, but just occasionally dreams do come true.
Still waiting for Clifden Nonpareil though.
I’m sure you’ll tick some of those off next year.
November 20, 2025 at 6:52 PM
I suppose that’s why I use the date to find images so much as although I do file things the number of images is so large that it’s really difficult. Perhaps more folders next year is all I can realistically promise.

The “Feels Like” temperatures need to increase a little. Maybe next week?

Maybe you need Emmet for a judgment?

Some moths have striped or brightly coloured legs which are worth seeing if possible. Getting even numbers is the ideal result.

Reading Atropos No76 featuring an interesting article of Julian Clarke’s account of finding Tamarisk Peacock.Chiasmia aestimaria in Sussex in 2024.
It reminded me that I may have trapped one on holiday in the South of France in 2023.
Tamarisk grows quite near here so one to watch out for?

Currently struggling with this one to get him to show a leg ! Slightest touch and everything is tucked firmly underneath.
November 18, 2025 at 3:58 PM
I often post pot shots first too and then spend time creating my Annual Record Photo which is often better lit, posed on a contrasting background with hopefully the legs and/or antennae showing. I only use a phone camera but sometimes the shots are substantially better than the posted ones.

It was chilly this morning at @nationaltrust.org.uk Sheffield Park with a North wind blowing.
At the bridge between Ten Foot Pond & Middle Lake the view was worth wrapping up for.
