But adding branches gets more and more difficult when its animated and voiced. They cant have the time and budget to record entire scenes with characters that may or may not be there having a major purpose. Its just that the only major deviation is who you romance, but most stays the same.

Well it's not really a visual novel issue, it's a fully animated fully voiced issue. They have "doomed" characters that you can't do anything serious with because they're optionally a part of most scenes (ie coupe and sonar)
Then there's aiming for sequels which locks the ending to some status quo.
