Day 9: leave work and walk home in snowstorm that's muffling the world in beauty

A little winter delight for your Tuesday afternoon

Day 8: in an evening snowstorm, may I recommend that your walk be across your friend's snowy lawn to her backyard sauna

Sure it's cold out, but just look at that pollen forecast

Day 7: when it's 5⁰ it's also okay to count running lots of errands as a walk, as long as you stop at least once to admire the beauty of the winter landscape

Writing is also realizing how faulty is memory. Because actually the great-grandmother's machine on which you learned to sew was not a Singer. It was a Necchi, which launched a popular model in 1925 to sell outside of Italy, in direct competition with Singer.

Day 6: cross-country skiing counts as a walk in this weather

Day 5: walk to work while the snow falls, blurring out the sun

Day 4: it was -4 (feels like -17!) when I took this of the ice flowers on my window yesterday morning. I was in meetings or class straight through from 8:45am til 4:45pm, which means it was dark when I left, so I counted the back-and-forth to my car three times as my outdoor walk.

Day 3: the light at the golden hour is sometimes actually pinkish.

Writing is asking the internet whether electric sewing machines were widely available in 1926, finding out that Singer released a very popular new model that year, clicking on a link to see what it looked like, and feeling completely breathless. 1/4

Day 2: I stepped outside, and the air was filled with sparkles—miniscule snowflakes bopping against my cheeks, sticking in my eyelashes, and filling my path with glints of light. When it's 16⁰ and sunny, with snow in the trees, the whole world glitters.

Thaler's post (click it for graph showing striking decreases in science spending) immediately under yet another repost of this fantastic letter to London Times. And I'd just like to say: can we PLEASE have a Democratic candidate who knows we need a massive reinvestment in US arts & humanities too?

I'm going to take a walk every day in December, I've promised myself, because it's far too easy to become a recluse in Minnesota winter. And I'm going to send you a picture to share my winter delight. Today, rabbits are going for a walk too.

This is a fantastic thread. (iykyk) And may I respectfully add St. Paul:

Pie #2 — pecan, with cocoa in the crust and a splash of bourbon in the batter

Show me your baked goods, friends! Here's my pie #1 — an apple tart with lots of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom, and a thin cheese layer (like in a danish) between the apples and the pastry.

Happy Thanksgiving break from your favorite professor cliché (negroni, typewriter I plan to get working over break, Scottish wool sweater)

This is from one year ago today. This year, I'm sorry today, the leaves have all come down already.

If it's hard to imagine how you could have had a worse week, may I recommend spending a few hours making a large cake for someone you love? There's something immensely soothing about delivering a heavy cake to an apartment full of college kids who are beside themselves to spend an evening in eating.

Even some of us aurora people are jealous...I had pretty, ethereal light pink and green, and my daughter one state south had this:

Chocolate chip cookies made with tahini and sesame seeds. Just what the doctor ordered for a chilly, overcast, winter-is-coming Sunday.

I give up. The @nytimes.com has no shame and almost no integrity.
