I rewatched M:I Ghost Protocol over the weekend alongside Rogue Nation. These 2 are the peak of the franchise for me: high-octane, stupendous, ridiculously entertaining action spectacles of the highest order. And soon, I'll get to write about one of them for @slashfilm.bsky.social. Yay!

Last night, I had the chance to rewatch the Irish remake of the War of the Buttons, a forgotten gem that greatly contributed to my childhood back in the 90s. It’s still a mischievous, funny, and subtly moving little film that evokes the beauty of what it meant to be a kid in a simpler time.

Is there anyone out there building a horror resume faster than Kyle Gallner these days? The dude is literally in every decent/good/great horror in some capacity.

THE KILLER is Fincher's sophisticated KILL BILL, a masterwork of artificial tranquility, anticipation, and suspense. Focused, precise, stylish. And I don't think it's as emotionally empty and soulless as many claim. Under its restraint, there's a heart, even if it's shallow.

Scavengers Reign's brutal eco-horror is a timely memento to remind us how insignificant and vulnerable mankind is. On a lush, rich, and spectacular planet, we are no more than inferior intruders, barely able to survive, while everything around us is flourishing magnificently. This show is a wonder.

THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER: Souls aren't free, even if they're rotten. A dark web of greed, privilege, and consequence, Flanagan's last show for Netflix, dipped in the eerie work of Edgar Allan Poe, is a monumental and carefully crafted cautionary tale for the ages. It'll be loved by many.

Spooky Season is upon us, and besides covering some of the upcoming horror shows, I'm also planning to publish a surprise piece with some horror delicacies at The Screen (thescreen.substack.com) in October. So now is a pretty good time to subscribe and not miss out.

Bottoms: I really hope that David Fincher and Chuck Palahniuk are proud that someone made a spiritual adaptation of Fight Club and turned it into one of the funniest and most bonkers movies of the year. Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri (the new Brad Pitt and Edward Norton), take a bow. You nailed it.

I'm a bit overdosed on grief as the central theme in modern horrors, but I gotta give it to TALK TO ME and its writer-director duo that they used it cleverly and moderately to unpack the emotions behind the story even if it didn't hit me as hard as I expected. It was beautifully inventive.

THE BOOGEYMAN: No wonder King actually liked this one because the entire movie is one big Stephen King vibe (both good and bad). Though wholly unoriginal, made with nothing but cliches, its atmosphere is wickedly harrowing with many "gotcha" spooky moments. It's a fun ride, if forgettable.

Remember when you were a kid with a mild cold, skipping school, laying in bed, watching TV, and immersing yourself in different movie universes all day? Only concerned about what your next watch is going to be, ignoring the outside world entirely. I've been chasing that high ever since.

MARTYRS: Pascal Laugier's film earned its horrific reputation. It's as violent, torturous, and stomach-churning as people say. It absorbs any hope and cuts your soul until it bleeds, but there's a reason for all that, and this movie justifies its cruelty by sticking to its vision all the way.

Next week, I'm starting a new column at The Screen (thescreen.substack.com) called "An Hour of Peak TV." In it, I'll celebrate and dissect some of the most iconic and beloved episodes of acclaimed shows that aired on television from 1999 onwards.

Any suggestions I should consider?

LITTLE BONE LODGE: It's cheap as hell but has a decent script (which clearly stole from many better thrillers) that manages to maintain a growing suspense throughout, which works to its advantage. If you're into dirty B film charm, you might have a good time with it on a rainy night.

THE DEEPEST BREATH: There are people who constantly seek something way beyond the normal and ordinary, and they're usually fascinating individuals. This documentary is about two of them, finding each other and always reaching for more. Breathtaking, spectacular, and heart-rending. Watch it.

Tobin Bell should have a course titled: How to Age Gracefully As a Horror Icon. The man looks stunning at 81.

Are you obsessed with movies and TV? Me too. Do you like reading about them? Me too. Do you want to constantly talk about pop culture? Me too. One of the many places where I do that is The Screen. Take a look and consider subscribing if you like it.

Although not wholly original, let alone smart, but COBWEB feels like a lost horror gem of the early aughts, delivering a lot of spooky fun, especially in its second half. It's sinister, atmospheric, and intriguingly predictable, which kind of works in its favor. Savor it.

The true star of NO HARD FEELINGS is Andrew Barth Feldman as Percy. To nail the shy and introverted teen in any summer comedy requires a delicate balance and Feldman has it. He's awkward, funny, and genuinely vulnerable when it matters, making this movie a heartwarming delight.
