Only about one in ten buildings is operating at a loss, though. That share used to be a bit higher in the early 90s and then again in the aughts.

But income is rising faster than operating costs. The underlying business of owning a rent-regulated building — before mortgage payments — is almost 50 percent more profitable than it was in 1990, right?

Each year, New York pads its state budget with hundreds of millions of unclaimed dollars.

But that money — now $20 billion! — is still owed to its original owners. Other states are more proactive in returning theirs, and a comptroller candidate wants to do the same.

Can @sengianaris.bsky.social or anyone else argue that this year's budget proposals represent the end of the days of incrementalism?

Take child care. None of the proposals offers enough to keep thousands of kids from being kicked off vouchers next month, let alone to expand the program.

Isn’t headcount way down since the 90s? Does that suggest to you that NY has done a good job minding the cash register for the last few decades?

Also, shouldn’t the size of state government be measured in comparison to the size of the state economy?
