I think thats a much more defensible claim than almost every white person overall tbh

Even then though, I'd be skeptical. Not re: the Southwest, but definitely outside of it. Maybe in certain industries where you're more likely to work with ESL people? 30-150 words isn't nothing.

This seems, at best, highly location dependent to be honest.

Reminds me of this Naruto clip that the dub team didn't even bother trying to recontextualize

Like I don't think you can explain millennial discontent with DoD cooperation without talking about Iraq

Its been a while since I read the book, but it discusses things like curriculum changes in the 70s, or the rejection of Project Maven in the 2010s as evidence of how intellectual trends have undermined the West's confidence. But then he doesn't really talk about why those trends came about.

The other thing that idt Tanner really focuses on that struck me is how little any of Karp's analysis is anchored in anything real. History is a series of trends out of academia, without the real events that created them, like Vietnam or the GWOT

That is legitimately exactly how I think I was introduced to you at an OCDP event (~10 years ago fwiw)

And sorry if I mischaracterized your argument, but you did also say that the takeaway ought to be that "the original poster is basically right"
December 5, 2025 at 4:52 PM
Sorry, but I think the choice of Brookline for this comparison totally undermines the argument. Its not even representative of Greater Boston, let alone of the country.

IOW, if $140k is at all tight in Brookline, then the answer to your 2nd question is "obviously yes"
December 5, 2025 at 4:51 PM
Even within a metro area? A post I've seen and responded to is talking about a budget in Brookline. You can surely live in more affordable areas within the Boston metro area while keeping your 130k job.
December 5, 2025 at 4:41 PM
Sorry, but my work takes me to places like Pontiac or Detroit, where people are legitimately income constrained and suffering deprivations to health and education. If I told them that 140k was the poverty line they'd ban me from the city limits

Sure, but the problem is that if you make it known that you will overlook some amount of fraud, it will quickly rise to a level that is very suboptimal.
