Shields was pointing a gun at her head. He had no idea where that had come from. But it felt good in his hand. Like it belonged there. ‘Sit!’ He barked. But she didn’t. Instead, she bent forward towards him. Over the table. She looked up at him through her eyelashes. ‘You didn’t say please.’ He tried to ignore the loose dress top and the lack of a bra. Unsuccessfully. The sharklike smile returned. ‘You Americans,’ she laughed. ‘Always with the tits and the guns. So very predict—’ He pulled the trigger.

And again Until her head was eviscerated. Unrecognisable. It squelched as it landed on the white carpet. There was commotion from the other side of the door. He raised the firearm towards the noise. The outer keypad beeped. He waited. Gun unwavering, enjoying this new version of the dream. Then he put the pistol's barrel in his own mouth. And pulled the trigger.

She snapped awake. The heavy curtains with thermal blackout lining on the Secret Service Agent’s window blocked any light from the 4:00 a.m. streetlights. But these were not typical Bed Bath & Beyond purchases. They were custom-made from a specialist shop in DC. The blurb on their website claimed they could stop anything from a bullet to a Hydra 70 rocket. The colour was also a special order. She’d have them for years, after all. Eventually, she settled on #730e19 and became somewhat obsessed with hex colour codes. One day, Anderson hoped to test the Hydra claim, but not in her apartment, thank you.

There was always a coffee table, no matter how quickly these emergency meetings were organised in this building. He spotted it in the far corner, to the left of the Secretary of State, and made his way there. “Any other monumentally stupid questions? I’m limiting myself to answering only two this week. Now’s your chance.”
