I don’t think I can change anyone’s mind though, so I’m just gonna leave it at that; really, we all have a different understanding on what’s morally good and bad
November 28, 2024 at 3:19 AM
so satirizing it is harmless; we all understand “they don’t really see real murder that way”. However, SA is brushed aside or excused by a great deal of society, so in my eyes, satirizing it does more harm than good, since there are so many people out there who genuinely do see SA as one big joke.
November 28, 2024 at 3:18 AM
I just don’t agree there. I believe that in order for something serious to be satirized, we need to reach a point where we first fully recognize the gravity of it— and we’re just not there yet with SA. The idea of murdering innocents for example is universally considered a bad, serious thing,
November 28, 2024 at 3:17 AM
I understand that; I woobify villains all the time. But SA in particular is such a delicate topic, not something that society has become comfortable with satirizing, unlike death for example. It’s why, as a victim, it hurts to see people acting like it’s just typical cartoon villain shenanigans

Of fucking course it’s a me problem; seeing people brush aside a character being a rapist because they’d rather talk about how hot he is or how cute he is, rather than grasp the importance of the discussion, is going to bother me. God forbid we treat rapist characters with a bit more maturity
November 27, 2024 at 4:21 AM
The intention is for him to be a manipulative narcissistic asshole; people are supposed to grasp that based off his actions. If someone went, “actually, I think what he did wasn’t bad at all, and I think he’s a sweetie pie”, does that not reflect how they view that kind of behaviour? 2/2
November 27, 2024 at 3:31 AM
I really just think you’re misunderstanding my point. I’m a horror artist; I draw fucked up shit; I’m all for depicting difficult things in fiction. But what I’m saying is that fiction is supposed to illicit a response. I have a character who’s a manipulative, narcissistic asshole. 1/2
November 27, 2024 at 3:30 AM
It’s just the basis of fiction; we know it’s not real, but we emotionally respond because it reflects reality. We’re supposed to know characters are evil if they’re written to be, and if someone doesn’t think a blatantly evil character’s actions are evil—like SA—I’m going to question their morality
November 27, 2024 at 3:20 AM
Yeah; I feel as though a lot of people mistake my argument as being that rapist characters shouldn’t exist, which is faaar from my point ofc. I just think that how people respond to a character’s actions should be taken into account despite it being fictional, like if they think SA isn’t a big deal
November 27, 2024 at 3:17 AM
But I’m referring to opinions on characters. We react to them like real people, just on a much smaller scale. We get sad when they die, or angry when they do wrong. We form emotional responses based on our morals. It’s why, as an extreme example, adults who sexualize fictional kids are morally bad.
November 27, 2024 at 3:08 AM
I understand wanting to infantilize & degrade him—I 100% don’t speak for all victims, all of our coping methods are different—but seeing people treating him with affection, saying the rapist thing doesn’t matter cause “there’s so much more to him” is more-so what I’m referring to. It feels wrong
November 27, 2024 at 2:49 AM
It feels wrong to imply that characters aren’t written with intention. If a character is a rapist, the audience SHOULD think “this character was written to be evil, not lovable.” Fiction & reality are separate, but our subconscious mind struggles to find the difference, so it can dictate our morals
November 27, 2024 at 2:41 AM
It’s not nearly as bad as fawning over real evil people, but SA is such a delicate topic. Fiction is fiction, but it’s based on reality; I don’t think that people should want to cuddle with plushies of a rapist character & gush about how silly they are. That should never be what the writer aims for
November 26, 2024 at 11:37 PM
I think the issue is just how people act in regards to them. People can appreciate Val as a character, but as someone who’s experienced SA, people fawning over him like he’s just “uwu cute wittle moth man” makes me upset. Characters like him should be handled properly, not kinned and coddled
