Anyway, the point is that the original Avatar is by far the largest IP to originate in a film since the original Star Wars and you would never guess it to look at how much people discuss specific elements of it

Yeah I would hold the zillionth entry in a franchise to a different standard though. Looking at the top 20, the only other film that is an original IP is the Lion King, another movie which has had an immeasurably larger cultural impact.

Sure but like, think about how many lines you can quote from Star Wars, for example. How many characters you can just name and be confident everyone will get it

The box office returns are the point. It’s weird how popular these movies are while not leaving any impact on the broader culture. You can’t casually refer to any characters by name or specific scenes without being ready to explain the reference even though everyone has seen the movie. It’s notable

I find it fascinating they went ahead with releasing an ad, knowing people would be mad about it, and then to mollify people they're talking up how they still had to work super hard on it, negating the ostensible reason to use the technology that's making people mad in the first place

Steam's clear stated policy is that they do not want to be in the business of policing speech and anything that is not literally illegal (i.e. revenge porn) should be allowed on their platform. Meanwhile they have literally tens of thousands of games with content as objectionable as this or more so
