Today the Canadian Theatre Critics Association announced the call for submissions for the 2025 Nathan Cohen Awards. An excellent opportunity for theatre writers based in Canada!

Deadline is Jan. 6. Feel free to drop me a line if you want to learn more!

Twitter trolls took this review about as well as I figured they might.

Saddened to see that Capital Critics Circle in Ottawa appears to have been shut down. End of an era for a site that, for better or worse, was often the only game in town for theatre criticism in Canada's capital.

Ooh, this is a fun one: Mirvish will co-produce an all-Canadian production of Bright Star this fall!

Oh, happy day: Kevin Wong’s luminous, wrenching musical Soft Magical Tofu Boy(s) has been programmed as part of the Festival of New Musicals in New York.

A year ago (?!), I watched a workshop of this show in a converted barn in CT and hoped hard that I’d get to see it again. This is huge.

First wave of extensions out of Stratford this morning: Unsurprising additions for the musicals, and glad to see Anne of Green Gables stretch further into the school year. A touch confounded by Macbeth, to be honest.

Greetings from St. Louis, Missouri, where it’s 34* in the shade and three companies’ worth of actors are rehearsing for a season of outdoor musical theatre.

Related: I held a Tony Award today. They’re heavier than they look!

Lots of Muny coverage to come. What a special place.

Very cool news out of Soulpepper tonight — the Tank House Theatre has officially been renamed the Weyni Mengesha Theatre.

A huge honour, and richly deserved by Mengesha.

Just caught HANS at Luminato, and for the most part, it’s a lovely TYA play full of puppets and age-appropriate silliness.

But I’d be lying if I said the highlight of the show wasn’t an actor backstage on a hot mic, whispering “for fuck’s sake,” piped to a theatre full of six-year-olds.

Re-watching the 2014 film of The Last Five Years and once again asking how the hell the layout of Jamie and Cathy’s apartment works.

Lovely living room, OK. But why is the kitchen off the bedroom. Why does the bedroom have no doors. WHY IS THE BED THERE.

Happy trails to this treasure of a show. 💙💛

Boosting this info for any friends and colleagues in Baltimore/Towson: Emily Jean, a friend from high school, has been missing for over a month — she was last seen in the Govans area but that info may be out of date. Please keep an eye out for her :(

This isn’t the same jacket, but the resemblance is pretty striking.

Loved writing this @theglobeandmail.com Q&A with Rosanna Deerchild, whose experience as a broadcaster could teach other playwrights a thing or two about how to write dialogue.

Catching up on The Handmaid’s Tale and downright tickled that The Globe and Mail Centre features so prominently in the fourth season.

Hearing that tonight’s performance of Just For One Day has been cancelled due to tech difficulties — show was supposed to start 20 minutes ago and audience was allegedly left outside to wait in the snow.

Two Mirvish reps apparently came onstage to apologize after letting people in late. #theaTO

Tough to believe it’s my last day in beautiful Whitehorse. More words soon but it’s been a great week.

Excited to be in Whitehorse, YT to cover Pivot Festival at Nakai Theatre! Tickled by the provided reading material. 🦇🦇🦇

I can’t quite believe I’m writing this, but I’ll be starting as the full-time theatre reporter for The Globe and Mail on January 23, 2025.

The more bittersweet news is that I’ll also be leaving my beloved Intermission Magazine.
