My recollection from my long ago Leaving Cert history class is that most of the antiTreaty side in the debate were concerned about the lack of a Republic and it was almost only the Monaghan TD(s) who were worried about parting with the 6 counties

Also when the sheriff calls out the guards in support of his enforcement actions they are technically … a posse

I have tried to use AI for language-related tasks and I’m not sure which annoys me more, its perfect imitation of lazy dishonest incompetence or the grovelling sycophantism of its responses

Good morning. I’ve just finished Martha Wells’ Queen Demon and considering what to read next. Possibly Kate Elliott’s The Nameless Land although that would be two big treats one after the other

Don’t know why the older words fell out of use; I’ve read too that “gealach” could be considered a kenning, in the sense of a figurative/ metaphorical name for something whose real name now almost taboo to use (cf names for bear in many Indo-European languages)

Wiktionary is probably taking this from McBain’s etymological dictionary, which I believe is considered unreliable. Meanwhile there is no sign of this as word for sausage at all in eDIL, which seems strange. OTOH there’s this paper about Norse loan words in Irish lup.lub.lu.se/luur/downloa...

Ar chuairt do m’athair go Würzburg, d’inis duine de mhuintir na háite dó go gcéiliúradh Oíche Fhéile Máirtín le dinnéar 🪿- “ach bhí an rud céanna againne i gConamara!” a deir m’athair

The GAA thing must relate to GAA “Scór” competitions, they have both “Rince Foirne” and “Rince Seit” competitions and presumably rules for both

Yeah, I think they thought it was too polluted with Saxon influences because of the quadrilles / lancers stuff so they wanted to reconstruct older “more authentic” traditional dancing

I see pavement used occasionally, especially in a technical materials sense, but footpath is still the main word
