I totally get that. I think my prolonged work in academia and my brief time as a video games journalist have helped with that although I definitely still have that problem. One trick is that I often make copies of my draft so I'm never permanently cutting anything but putting it aside for later.

it also depends a bit from story to story, but i have an easier time working through structure problems when things arent as abstract haha

i actually use structures like this more in editing than in the initial writing phase. once i have a bunch of text these tools become a good way of figuring out what is missing or needs reworking/rearranging

but then it feels wrong because what if the wheel isn't connected at all then how is it part of the creature? maybe one arm rotates with the wheel and other rotates freely on its own. that way the divide between wheel and arms is more challenging?

i think its original. sometimes i picture basic assumptions about nature and try to find ways to break them while keeping enough 'nature' to create dissonance. no animal in nature has a wheel and axle. thus, if my memory serves me, this thing was born
