My favourite exhibit in the Shackleton Polar Museum - this digital “experience” - with added wind - of the desperate and successful saving of the entire crew, by sailing the James Caird to South Georgia to seek rescue, including a hike across the mountains with a ghostly presence

And the Shackleton Polar Museum at Athy has a rich collection of objects - including items from Shackleton’s expeditions to the South Pole, including the cabin where he sadly passed away in the Quest , superbly conserved

The Shackleton Polar Museum in Athy is amazing!!! Superb architectural design, exhibits, recreations, movies - the reconstruction of the James Caird rescue voyage alone is terrific - one of the best museums I’ve been in. Get to Athy, Co Kildare, Ireland!!!

I have no idea why that’s “Dhíoltá”… not a clue - but that’s the flaw in DuoLingo I suppose, even it has been 514 days

I mean, what the hell is “D’fhaighidís” (I used to get) - how do you carry that word around in your head? 🥺
November 18, 2025 at 6:30 PM
I mean I can see it, “thagainn” - ‘I used to come’ - but first time I’ve seen it. Did I not learn this in school at all, at all?
November 18, 2025 at 6:26 PM
For example, I’ve never seen the word “D’itheadh” - ‘used to eat’ or D’imrinn “ I used to play”, I don’t even know the rules of how I and my cat are differentiated here … ?

This is the first time I’ve been daunted by Irish

I don’t know how I’m going to learn the past habitual - it’s a whole new set of Irish words I’ve never seen before … 😳

Conall wanted to come for a Saturday morning run with me, but when he saw the grim weather through the door, he snuck off back to the boys’ bedrooms 🤣

Memories of plunging my hand deep into the very cold peat to uncover Iron Age wooden planks last seen over 2,000 years ago.

In 1986, I started work on my first archaeology dig at Corlea 1, dated to 148/147 BC. I didn’t know then it would be some of the most spectacular archaeology of my career.

A small gift to myself from eBay for my UCD office - Indy with MP40 Schmeisser to go with his Da, Prof Henry Jones, Sr, medievalist and Grail scholar

"Let my armies be the rocks and the trees and the birds in the sky”

Or

“Let’s punch some Nazis”

Halloween in Ireland in 1832.

“Snap Apple Night, or All Hallow Eve”, by Daniel McAlise

In October 1832 Daniel Maclise attended a Halloween party in Blarney, Ireland and in 1833, exhibited painting at London’s Royal Academy of Arts, showing dancing, bobbing for apples, and other traditional games
