It's still weird, they could have very well used the same digitized sounds from the Amiga version. Who knows what happened 🤷‍♂️

Very much looking forward to the FS-UAE rewrite. You might be able to achieve a similar look, with the exception of the ReShade step which only available on Windows. Still, those are simple shaders that can be converted in the future. Let me know how it goes!

It takes a while, but this is an extremely faithful reproduction of how a 1084 monitor looks. Works with WinUAE: blog.johnnovak.net/2022/04/15/a...

Yes, I detect *some* digital effects, but the majority seems FM. I'll give it another shot.
December 1, 2025 at 4:37 PM
OK, seems like it was the other way around: FM synthesis on DOS, wavetable on Amiga. Even with Sound Blaster sans MT-32.

Fine, fine, point is, it could be done. I know that wasn't its main selling point by a long shot.

Firing up DOSBox too. This doesn't end here.

Well, yes, it's soft, but it's still leveraging hardware capabilities. If we're strict, even digital or wavetable effects are synthetized at some point. I don't think Bitmap Bros had aliens grunting and recording the effects.

Actually, hold on... digital sound effects on PC? You sure? 🤔

Can't really tell to which extent games used this, but the sound effects in Gods are different for some reason.

I really appreciated the early sci-fi pulp design they went for.
December 1, 2025 at 2:17 PM
They're not exactly the same effects though, pretty sure they're synthetized in the Amiga version.
December 1, 2025 at 2:13 PM
OK, now seriously: I checked it out and prefer it without the in-game OST. The monster grunts, that cavernous, atmospheric feel is gone with the MT-32. Another nice touch is in the Amiga you can hear the guy panting when you climb ladders. The MT-32 conversion of the main tune is cool, though.

3.30 and this is final

It's too woke around these parts, or so Elon says
November 30, 2025 at 11:34 PM
I, err... well, the quietness of the Amiga version is what the developers intended and all those MT-32 additions were corporate pressure to compete with Sierra.
November 30, 2025 at 11:33 PM
YEAH

I'll compare the Amiga soundtrack vs. MT-32 and get back to you

But PC was always missing the funky intro

Have you read his eulogy for Becky Heineman?

And quite indeed the whole game corrupted while the alien was chasing me and I had to reload a previous save, just like ye olde days.
