Long time game (C++ at Artech Studios, Ottawa, Canada) and BeOS/Haiku OS (C++ apps, file systems) programmer. Used Ruby on Rails for a less evil social media reputation system experiment. Now (2025) distracted by Nth Pong Wars, a Nabu Z80 game project.
For bonus points, run your web server in a virtual machine. Easy to go back to a saved snapshot if you’re worried about it getting hacked. Also reduces the chance they hack your actual computer.

Lots of open port access attempts (particularly SSH), but you can use Fail2Ban to block them efficiently at the firewall. Also useful for blocking web site pests.

The downside with DNS updates is maybe 10 minutes for the change to propagate around the network.

I use up to date router firmware, something like www.asuswrt-merlin.net for Asus routers works.

Though watch out for consumer level (cheap) ISPs that use carrier grade NAT to share one address between multiple customers.

I’m using our local National Capital Freenet as an ISP, with a static address for a few dollars extra per month.

Another alternative is to use a DNS service like NameCheap which has a web API for changing the IPv4 address you have registered, which you can call from a script that detects change.

Lots of right turns onto our local traffic blocked road when right turns aren't allowed at that time of day. Maybe someone could set up a house webcam to monitor that. The police don't have the resources other than a visit once or twice a year.

I like that stupiditySeverity field :-)

Would a times seen counter in addition to the existing first seen and last scene dates be useful?

And if your data gets stolen? At least you’re hashing some of the sensitive info.

I see house cameras watching a neighbourhood as another use case.

Seems to be cleared, just travelled from Tunney’s to St. Laurent without problems.

Yes, it’s been paved and has street lights with graffiti. There’s a pedestrian path to the bridge now, with a gate. The old train tracks are still there too, in case Gatineau ever allows a train station on their side of the river. There’s sometimes a homeless camp in that area too.

Huh? It’s got street names. That’s the path from the William Commanda bridge to Bayview station.

Yeah, started February 2024. But it’s starting to get good. Well, only 20K of RAM free so it will have to stop sometime.

Unless I implement code overlays! Nah, just kidding, overlays are too much of a pain. Doing the runtime relocator to free up ROM space for RAM was enough work.

I find that you have to hold down the button for five or more seconds for it to register. Works at Bayview station westbound. Though that heated area isn’t fully enclosed, so it’s just radiant heat you get.

Have fun! I’m busy with my #NabuPC Z80 #NthPongWars game level loader and meta language (besides loading, setting victory conditions, and such stuff, it can decide on the next level).

Actually, I was going to mow the leaves and grass once all the leaves were down. Had a windy enough day a few days ago, which knocked down the last of the leaves and blew drifts of them off the roof, but now it’s too wet to mow. So next time we have a warm sunny day, likely after a ski week :-), …

Got the snow shovels out yesterday, just in case. Also got the lawn mower queued up. Just in case.

Nicely, the “Transit” app reported a pair of 85s correctly, with almost the same arrival times, just that the bus in the lead flipped down to the next minute slightly before the other bus. Guess GPS and cell phone position algorithms are good enough to distinguish between the busses.

Something similar now for the Ottawa Citizen. Though they use the extra papers for classroom teaching. A good idea if you want to have readers in the next generation.

Nice to hear. Thanks to my dermatologist for recommending it a few years ago.
