A y-cut at the single subject level is basically what we end up with. But I’ve preferred to do it per person rather than using an MNI template y=-21 or whatever your cutoff happens to be, largely because it’s a small additional cost in time for the anatomical ambiguity it addresses.

We’ve been happy using freesurfer for the whole hippocampus mask and then manually segmenting anterior/posterior using the uncal apex as a landmark (basically following Poppenk et al. 2013). RAs I’ve trained pick up the landmark quickly and it’s just a couple minutes per brain after that.
