But I had this bad enough that I couldn't close or open my mouth all the way, and managed to massage the cartilage back in as above - restored full motion with pain basically instantly and pain was gone in like 2 days.

It's actually the cartilage cushioning your jaw popping in and out, and sometimes it can pop out *pretty bad*

It's difficult to describe what I did, but, like, feel around where the jaw meets, near your ear, and try pressing in with fingers while you open and close your jaw.
