His father was actually fully laughing now, and Draco wanted to hex him. But he never got the chance because Granger immediately started in on

“Oh, I see.” she said, but Draco didn’t so he asked her to clarify.

“You’re saying that I’m not good enough to be on the arm of a Malfoy unless I’m a useful pawn in their scheme?!” her voice had risen an octave, and he noticed belatedly that her hair had come undone and sparkled with magic.

“My father would never accompany you to this absolutely dull Christmas ball unless he had ulterior motives and blackmailed you.”

His father snorted again, and this time Draco turned to fix him with a glare so he would shut up. When he looked back at Granger she looked pissed.

Granger apparently was not willing to accept this. “And what evidence do you have to support these claims?” she asked archly.

“I’m looking at the evidence right now.”

God’s he loved an assertive woman, and she was the most assertive of them all. But he wouldn’t be distracted - not even by her.
