Computing and ICT in a Nutshell

'One of the best places I have found online to make the abstract, hard to visualize concepts in computer science much more accessible and understandable.' https://www.advanced-ict.info/
About half the of videos in YouTube currently are reactions to this. It is brilliant, though!

I registered, but I couldn't persuade any of our students to do it - I can't really do it in lessons as you might in a school.

...but other methods are available, e.g. HSL. That can make it easier to lighten or darken shades, or to create random colours programmatically.

How can we describe colours using hue, saturation and lightness?

How we can describe colour is a fundamental part of understanding how to represent images. Mostly we seem then represented using RGB values...

My son wanted to go for his birthday in the summer. There are three that are about the same distance from here, and the price varied quite a lot. It was unbearably hot in July!

I've just remembered that I wrote a blog about this sort of thing (and also not being clear where the "consensus" comes from):

Is the computing 'gene pool' becoming increasingly narrow?

There's been a lot of talk about this sort of thing recently, with calls for a return to an ICT-type curriculum, but:
1. students will only learn to do the things they need to do - they also don't know about punched cards
2. these things were never explicitly in the ICT National Curriculum either

For example, if you see everyone in forums and on social media saying that GCSE Computer Science is too hard, and you don't agree, then it's probably helpful to hear other people saying what you think. It's not about being contrary, just about considering the full range of opinions.

That's why I'm presenting at BCLC in January - I couldn't really complain that we always see the same people at conferences and then turn down the invitation. I also have some thoughts about computing that don't don't coincide with the prevailing mood but it's important to hear a range of ideas.

When I went to the Festival of Computing social it seemed that everyone was from Raspberry Pi or exam board. That's also what bothers me about the curriculum review - the most vocal people aren't teachers and a good proportion of them aren't even from a computing background.

I mean actual sorting, rather than writing a program to sort things.

This is the IT National Curriculum from 1995 - it does include the word "keyboards", but there's no mention of files or folders, or of being able to type or use a mouse. Why is it that people think that those things were lost in the move to Computing?
