the only way art will be somewhat safe from said vandals is if it supports state interests, and even then there's no guarantee, especially if the artist has a minority identity.

i agree; i love explaining my materials and narrative process. well, except for my watercolor process, which i guess i'm in a fugue state while painting, because i don't remember shit about them.

if you click the thread and scroll up a bit, you'll find his first post and premise is "The ability of small firms to advertise directly to consumers across the country thanks to the internet is one of the things that makes the modern economy suck so much."
December 2, 2025 at 3:31 AM
no, i disagree with his initial premise.

i suspect part of the solution is worker-owned companies, but i am not unionist enough to connect those dots.

modern advertising relies on emotional and attentional tricks to manipulate us into being familiar with brands. in my view, it matters very little if they do it through local road signs, charity, newspaper ads, pr on television, or spam on the internet. it's still just a trick.

there is basically no web of trust among corporations because they have, to my knowledge, repeatedly demonstrated they are not trustworthy; at best, they may be only occasionally useful.
November 30, 2025 at 9:47 PM
one of the reasons i like bluesky is that the only accounts i see are ones i've specifically sought out and posts they like. not sure it translates well outside of art, though: i detest most brands due to labor practices and because corporations are not my friends.
November 30, 2025 at 9:47 PM
i am deeply depressed about how workers are increasingly required to turn themselves into brands in order to participate in this new "web of trust", but to me, it seems the natural extension of amoderated mass media, that is, mass media that is moderated poorly.
November 30, 2025 at 9:47 PM
these days, advertising is pretty trivial and everyone does it, so consumers have been left to work around it and utilize other avenues of trust, including influencers.
November 30, 2025 at 9:47 PM
i agree with the OP conclusion, but think the problem instead lies with the nature of trusted information sources. back in the day, advertising used to be expensive, and so only the successful companies could do it.

they covet the qualities of artistry--skill, success, and cultural importance--while reviling the personal transformation one must undertake.

it must have been wild to be an artist back in that time period of plein air and photography!
