Wealth distribution is even uglier
The table you posted doesn’t show debt decreasing. It shows PROPORTION of debt decreasing for lower percentiles. Meaning while mortgage debt continued to increase, the proportion of that debt held by the bottom 80% decreased. The top 20% were purchasing homes at a higher rate than the bottom 80%.

Could that be because home ownership rates fell overall (likely primarily for middle and lower percentiles since they didn’t get the income tax cuts that higher percentile earners did)?
