“Helmethead” will be stuck in my head all tomorrow now.
For the best TV show about hockey, may I humbly suggest Shoresy? It is fantastic and very Canadian.
I’m not finding an appropriate clip to share, so here’s Newfoundland hockey banter from related show Letterkenny

Exactly. I couldn’t have described the feeling better.

In Canada’s case, the underspending isn’t ideological: everyone except the left-most parts of the NDP and the Bloc agree we should be spending more.
We’ve just had three decades of gov’ts of both parties being cheap and complacent and voters going along with it.
…Which doesn’t make it any better.

I hate this. And I hate so much more because it feels like it’s correct.

I knew none of that story. Thanks!

Can you expand on what you mean here?

I laughed out loud at this.

This is exactly it. Small nations are afforded the same agency and right to self-defense and self-determination as big powers. To think otherwise is terminal empire brain.

A few years ago, a skunk had just moved under my front step and I was planning to get rid of it. Then one night, my partner saw the floofy little thing trundling up the sidewalk and she exclaimed “Sonya the Skunk!”
Once it had a name, who could be so heartless as to evict it? It still lives there.

Worth noting also that while Russians have been dying in droves, it’s mostly not the sons of nice, middle-class families in Moscow or St. Petersburg dying in the cold in trenches; it’s poor bastards from Bashkiria, Tatarstan and Dagestan who have no better options and no voice at the Kremlin.
December 16, 2025 at 7:26 AM
Honestly, I’d chalk it up to being from (and at some level identifying with) a contemporary imperial power. If you’re from the States, geopolitics is a question of big powers (Russia, China, arguably others). The fates of small countries and the people who live there are secondary.
December 16, 2025 at 7:20 AM
I’m always so curious why people who leap to Russia’s defense think that the people in the countries beside Russia don’t deserve the same rights to self-determination as Russians do. Like they’re just buffer states who don’t *really* count.

I want a politician who lives and breathes their role, has a burning passion for fixing what’s not working, and endless patience for dealing with the awful tedium of elected office. They need to deeply want the job to have the drive to do it well. Otherwise, they’re just a nice placeholder.
December 16, 2025 at 2:33 AM
I know this is an over-serious reply to a joke (sorry), but this is such a pet peeve of mine.
I get the concerns about amoral power-seekers, but trying to actually do a good job and effect change as an elected official is bloody hard and all-consuming. You can’t be half-hearted or on the fence.
December 16, 2025 at 2:27 AM
That’s not fair.
It *also* sells low-rent scam ads and crypto bullshit.

Yeah, everyone, listen to what Steve Bannon’s friend has to say!

The best/worst part of those games is having all this geography trivia knowledge, but mentally associating it with past games. Which is unhelpful in conversation.
“Oh, I’m from an island called Cebu in the Philippines”
“Of course I’ve heard of it! It produces gems and has a great trade node!”

I’ve lived right near Rue Marie Anne Gaboury for years, and never realized she was Riel’s grandma! That’s such a cool fact!
December 15, 2025 at 1:12 AM
Largely accurate! For Edmonton, the new outer suburbs are largely SFH (booo), but are also packed in pretty densely.
In the neighbouring counties, however, you get both similar density SFH suburbs as well as the more sprawly, semi-acreage style developments Urbanity was talking about.

Man, I haven’t seen that movie since I was a little kid, and I do not remember that scene being so heartbreaking.
December 14, 2025 at 11:22 AM
Sorry, I should’ve just looked it up. This does make it look like all the miscellaneous multi-unit infill that isn’t strictly duplex or row would default to “apartment”?
December 14, 2025 at 2:27 AM
I’m curious: would this count 4, 6, or 8-plexes and stuff like basement suites and garage sweets as row housing or as multifamily? I’d guess that most of the infill in my area would be some combination of those, not just duplex or a more strict row house.
