Don't be surprised when Trump exploits the tragedy of the two Guard members shot today — by who-knows-who for God-knows-what — to use as a weapon against the rest of us. /fin

"Are you stuck here for Thanksgiving?"
"Yes," said the young man, "but they are providing for us. We will be provided for." Meaning, I assumed, that the Army would give them turkey and mashed potatoes.
Just look at what Trump is putting these people through—all for display.

"What state are you from?" I asked two National Guard soldiers posted at the Eastern Market Metro station.
"Ohio, ma'am."
They were two, a short woman and a tall man. They both looked all of 19 or 20, with smooth pale skin and blue eyes.
"I bet you miss your families," I said.

On Sunday, I spoke with two members of the Guard who were posted at the entrance to the Eastern Market Metro station, much as the two Guard members shot today were posted to the Farragut West station. (No, those shot today were not at the White House.)

I hope and pray that the Guard members in hospital after having been shot make a full recovery, and that justice is served in the adjudication of the shooter. I am despondent that this happened in my beloved city.

Of course, the ultimate responsibility for the shooting lies with the shooter. But those who spout violent rhetoric, as Trump does, know the likelihood of some unhinged person acting in response to it is real.

Trump chose to politicize the mission of the National Guard in an era of mounting political violence. He put them in harm's way, made them targets for any unhinged person with a grudge and a gun.
