Following up: I just got a chance to chat with an inspector about this, and I was wrong. Because those dip switches are (in theory) only serviceable by a qualified electrician, we can use that limited value in the demand calculation and to size the breaker/conductors!

Oh I know and agree with you. Unfortunately it takes a while for regulations to catch up with the advancement in technology. And in the meantime it's the code's job to be over-cautious in preventing folks from dying in a fire.

You might be right there, but even if a 50A charger is internally limited to 20A, the device is still rated for the full 50 and I can't find anything in the code that would allow us to downsize its rating.

I do commercial so I don't claim to be an expert on resi code - just trying to have a crack!

The exact wording: 8-106.10 Where electric vehicle supply equipment loads are controlled by an electric vehicle energy management system, the demand load for the electric vehicle supply equipment shall be equal to the maximum load allowed by the electric vehicle management system.

In Canada at least, 8-106.10 of the CEC says that for electric car chargers with variable outputs, we have to treat them as operating at the maximum allowable load. 8-200.1c says that the building service must account for car chargers at 100% demand.

Maybe a dedicated smaller charger?

What?? You mean returning corporate tax rates to 52% would both massively increase government revenue *and* encourage better worker compensation to mitigate the tax burden?? Madness! /s

We've got a similar problem with the BC Labour Board where we've given up our right to strike in exchange for the arbitration they've failing to provide.

People need to remember that labour has all the power - we just need to seize it.

The countertop soda makers (like sodastream) are a game changer - you could be living this life tomorrow

They're phenomenal! I've saved hundreds of dollars in paper and ink since buying mine, and it's completely changed my workflow in non-music stuff. For instance I download, sign, and return contracts without ever needing to print or scan them.
