7:47PM Filipino domestic worker flees down stairs, saves child When the fire broke out, Filipino domestic worker Reinalyn Niere was asleep with her employers’ three-year-old child in a third-floor flat at Wang Tao House. The child’s parents were at work at the time. Initially, they believed their home would not be affected but a friend called Niere to warn her that the building was on fire. Niere escaped with the child via the stairwell, which was filled with thick smoke. She said she covered the child and ran downstairs, shielding the baby from falling embers as she pushed through the flames. Niere says she is still in pain after colliding with bamboo scaffolding during the escape. She is now staying at the baby’s grandmother’s home, about 1.5km (0.93 miles) from the fire site. Meanwhile, a Filipino domestic worker who saved her employer’s baby remains in intensive care with damage to her lungs after three days, according to the Bethune House Migrant Women’s Refuge, whose members visited her on Sunday.

B. Community members as agents on the ground A massive community effort is ongoing. People set up shelters and resource collection points that operate around the clock. They quickly reported in Telegram groups that the resource collected is more than enough, as there are too many people rushing to donate. Help from other parts of the city is also coordinated to avoid traffic congestion because too many people want to help. For many years, Tai Po, the region in which Wang Fuk is located, has had a strong, cohesive and proud identity. Different businesses provide help in their capacities. Tuck shops in the district have been delivering bento boxes to evacuees, and some other restaurants are providing free food and drinks. Stores selling electronic products are donating power banks, while a number of Chinese medicine practitioners are offering medical care. The shopping malls opened overnight as a shelter, providing food and electricity.

Having spent the past couple days marveling at and being inspired by the organic response of so many in HK to the tragedy at Wang Fuk Court, I came back to this passage from Václav Havel's "The Power of the Powerless":
Here and there—thanks to the nature, the assumptions, and the professions of some people, but also thanks to a number of accidental circumstances such as the specific nature of the local milieu, friends, and so on—a more coherent and visible initiative may emerge from this wide and anonymous hinterland, an initiative that transcends “merely” individual revolt and is transformed into more conscious, structured, and purposeful work. The point where living within the truth ceases to be a mere negation of living with a lie and becomes articulate in a particular way is the point at which something is born that might be called the “independent spiritual, social, and political life of society.” This independent life is not separated from the rest of life (“dependent life”) by some sharply defined line. Both types frequently co-exist in the same people. Nevertheless, its most important focus is marked by a relatively high degree of inner emancipation. It sails upon the vast ocean of the manipulated life like little boats, tossed by the waves but always bobbing back as visible messengers of living within the truth, articulating the suppressed aims of life. What is this independent life of society? The spectrum of its expressions and activities is naturally very wide. It includes everything from self education and thinking about the world, through free creative activity and its communication to others, to the most varied free, civic attitudes, including instances of independent social self-organization. In short, it is an area in which living within the truth becomes articulate and materializes in a visible way.

9:47PM Petition founder detained by national security police A source has confirmed to the Post that a founder of a petition for the government to address four demands on follow-up work to the fire has been detained by national security police. The Post has learned that the man concerned is identified as “Miles Kwan” and is one of the people who launched the online petition. “Miles” and a group of unnamed others set up the “Tai Po Fire Concern Group” and launched a petition calling for “four demands”. They include ongoing support for victims, setting up an independent commission of inquiry and pursuing accountability and holding government officials responsible. The Instagram page of the group and the link to participate in the petition are no longer available, according to a Post check this evening.

The news that’s been coming out of Tai Po the past couple days—including the foreign domestic workers among the dead, injured, and missing—has me thinking a lot today about a particular painting by HK artist Yeung Tong Lung.
Yeung Tong Lung’s painting ‘Whitty Street Fo Jeng (Gas Tank) Huǒ Jǐng’. It depicts a masked bicycle delivery woman, perhaps of South or Southeast Asian heritage, in black leggings, a black t-shirt, and flipflops holding up a phone towards the viewer, as if she is collecting an order. She is in an outdoor park area, surrounded by trees, with shops in the background. There are numerous square grates visible on the concrete she stands on. Whitty Street Fo Jeng (Gas Tank) Huǒ Jǐng depicts a food delivery woman seeking directions amidst the streets of Hong Kong. The work prompts viewers to reflect on a forgotten chapter of Hong Kong’s history, while simultaneously showing the artist’s keen recollection of his beloved city. The work juxtaposes a myriad of perspectives, exemplified by the inclusion of a man whose presence is only discernible through his bent back, peering in the corner of the canvas, with his forearm extending out from an unlikely angle. The manholes at the foreground are depicted from a top angle, while the lush trees in the background extend skyward beyond the confines of the canvas. The intentional use of different vantage points conjures an illusion of three-dimensionality, one that is not attainable in real life. Whitty Street, known colloquially as Fo Jeng or “gas tank”, derives its name from a gasometer once stationed there during the colonial era. In 1934, a leak in a gas tank resulted in a huge gas explosion in the area, leading to extensive damages and a devastating fire. During the accident, a South Asian watchman in the nearby neighborhood rushed into the fire scene, activating the emergency device to redirect remaining gas from the gas cylinders through the pipelines into the sea, thereby averting a greater catastrophe. He tragically lost his life in the process. To honor his sacrificial act, the locals erected a memorial tablet for him at the location of the gas explosion. The tablet was subsequently removed during recent years of gentrification but the title of Yeung’s work recalls the story of this nameless hero.
