#JustWatched Weak Spot, one of @filmsradiance.bsky.social January titles, a fun thriller that’s heavy on the character work and dialogue. Exceptionally French in execution (despite being made by a German). Looking forward to rewatching with @aheartofgould.bsky.social commentary.

Lost Highway is so good. It was a favourite of mine for many, many years, and I’m happy that more people are starting to appreciate it. Such a powerful examination of male toxicity, jealousy and obsession. It’s the Vertigo of the 90s.

#JustWatched Fast Company, a film by David Cronenberg, not that you would have ever guessed that. A pretty fun film even for someone who has zero knowledge or interest in drag racing culture. Will be discussing in more detail on the next episode of They Live By Film.

I’m genuinely so fucking sad. A “celebrity” death has never really affected me like this before. Lynch was a titan, one of the first filmmakers I fell in love with as a teenager. An incredible human. The world was a better place for having him, and a darker place now without him. His art is eternal.

#NowWatching Pit Stop, directed by Jack Hill. This films has a dune buggy scene that is completely irrelevant to the plot, but it’s fucking awesome.

I noticed in today’s Radiance newsletter that the Bunuel set is 80% sold out. If you are on the fence about buying this then don’t let the opportunity slip. Having just finished the set I can attest to its quality. The rigid case and artwork is stunning and the restorations are beautiful.

Hey #filmsky, who is your favourite director? And what is your favourite film by them that you think doesn’t get enough love?

I’ll go first, Shadow of a Doubt by Hitchcock.

Everyone is praising Brady Corbet for The Brutalist but forgetting that he already achieved true kino in 2004’s Thunderbirds.

I Vampiri was a great discovery. I loved the previous Freda release (The Horrible Dr. Hitchcock) so I was very excited by this, especially with the added bonus of Mario Bava behind the camera. The film is a great matchup of classic gothic horror and a blueprint for what Bava would create with giallo

Another angry film starring Volonte that I LOVED is the Elio Petri mafia mystery, We Still Kill the Old Way. The screenplay for this film is incredible. For fans of Chinatown.

Slap the Monster on Page One is a recent release, and it still lives in my head rent free. The anger that I felt watching this film is almost indescribable, and Volonte’s lead performance is one of his best.

My favourite film from the excellent World Noir Vol 2 boxset was this German film, Black Gravel. The film emulates the classic era of noir but also has modern, Antonioni-esque flourishes, and the small town setting was reminiscent of Twin Peaks (minus the demons).

The biggest surprise of the year came in the form of Tchao Pantin, a film I knew nothing about, featuring a cast & crew I knew nothing about. But it blew me away. A stunning and stylish neo-noir that has aesthetic similarities to The American Friend, alongside an excellent road performance.

I was so excited when Radiance announced Bandits of Orgosolo. I fell in love with De Seta’s short films (which are also included) a few years ago, so getting to a see a feature from him was an incredible experience. A must-see for all Italian neorealism fans.

Next is the stunning Suzhou River, a film that is best described as “Vertigo told through the style of Wong Kar Wai”. A singular piece of cinema.

Here is a thread 🧵 of some of my favourite @filmsradiance.bsky.social films that they released this year.

Starting off with the brilliant Tai Kato film, By a Man’s Face Shall You Know Him, a time-hopping crime drama starring the excellent Noboru Ando. Kato’s films have been a revelation

Is The Day of the Outlaw a film noir? I’m certainly counting it. An incredibly tense snow western where humanity’s darkest characteristics come out in force in a small town. Robert Ryan is fantastic in the leading role.

Speaking of plots told with flashbacks.. Stanley Kubrick’s legendary heist film is a story-telling tour-de-force full of intriguing twists, dark ironic humour, and hard boiled characters.
December 20, 2024 at 9:39 PM
Jacques Tourneur’s Nightfall may be on the shorter side, but he packs it to the brim with great dialogue, and an intriguing plot that unfolds through flashbacks.
