There is remarkable bipartisan consensus in this week's Economist/YouGov polling that neither Democrats nor Republicans trust the federal government to do what's right (18% say always/most of the time, vs 82% sometimes/never), and that it works for big interests (76%), not the people (11%). 1/2

Trying the owner angle. It’s a holiday though so may not get anyone until tomorrow. —— Posting for a friend not on Reddit; hoping for some advice. Friend was in a long term stay (6 weeks) in a Sonder in DC, but was out of town for Veterans Day weekend. The staff called him yesterday (11/10) and asked him to vacate the room by 9am tomorrow (11/11). He took an emergency flight back and by 10pm, he was locked out. He has a few thousand dollars worth of clothes, luggage, and other important and sensitive things. He was staying there with his things until he could move into a year lease rental in a week. He went back this morning (11/11) and it’s a ghost town. There’s no one around. He’s been outside since 7:30am. Another family staying there, also locked out, said their passports are in the safe in their room. The police say he has to file something in small claims court to get his stuff. Marriott says they can’t do anything. Sonder phones seem deactivated. But it seems silly that sonder or Marriott can’t just let a guest go back into the building just to grab their things. This isn’t even asking for compensation — this is his own stuff. The doors are all electronic keypads. They could deactivate/activate remotely. Someone could verify the guest, send a code, then deactivate immediately so they can get their stuff. Also, word of warning to anyone chasing status: he’s a titanium member, and they’re still treating him like shit. Everyone is acting like they can’t do anything about it. So next time you think about adding a hotel stay or two or doing a mileage run to chase status…. Just know loyalty means absolute shit.

In Pennsylvania, partisan gerrymandering is forbidden under the Free and Equal Elections Clause of our state constitution. The core test comes from this 2018 PA Supreme Court decision. scholar.google.com/scholar_case...
Consequently, for all of these reasons, and as expressly set forth in our Order of January 22, 2018, we adopt these measures as appropriate in determining whether a congressional redistricting plan violates the Free and Equal Elections Clause of the Pennsylvania Constitution. Therefore, an essential part of such an inquiry is an examination of whether the congressional districts created under a redistricting plan are: composed of compact and contiguous territory; as nearly equal in population as practicable; and which do not divide 817*817 any county, city, incorporated town, borough, township, or ward, except where necessary to ensure equality of population. Order, 1/22/19, at ¶ "Fourth."[72] We recognize that other factors have historically played a role in the drawing of legislative districts, such as the preservation of prior district lines, protection of incumbents, or the maintenance of the political balance which existed after the prior reapportionment. See, e.g., Holt I, 38 A.3d at 1235. However, we view these factors to be wholly subordinate to the neutral criteria of compactness, contiguity, minimization of the division of political subdivisions, and maintenance of population equality among congressional districts. These neutral criteria provide a "floor" of protection for an individual against the dilution of his or her vote in the creation of such districts. When, however, it is demonstrated that, in the creation of congressional districts, these neutral criteria have been subordinated, in whole or in part, to extraneous considerations such as gerrymandering for unfair partisan political advantage, a congressional redistricting plan violates Article I, Section 5 of the Pennsylvania Constitution.

SCOTUS has granted certiorari in a case asking whether states can still choose to accept and count mail-in ballots which are postmarked by Election Day, as long as they are received soon thereafter, or whether federal law mandates E-Day receipt in federal races. www.supremecourt.gov/search.aspx?...

As for why Justice Jackson did it, to me, the clue is the last sentence. Had Jackson refused to issue an administrative stay, it’s entirely possible (indeed, she may already have known) that a majority of her colleagues were ready to do it themselves. I still think that this is what happened back in April when the full Court intervened shortly before 1 a.m., without explaining why Justice Alito hadn’t, in the A.A.R.P. Alien Enemies Act case. And from Jackson’s perspective, an administrative stay from the full Court would’ve been worse—almost certainly because it would have been open-ended (that is, it would not have had a deadline). The upshot would’ve been that Judge McConnell’s order could’ve remained frozen indefinitely while the full Court took its time. Yesterday’s grant of a stay in Trump v. Orr, for instance, came 48 days after the Justice Department first sought emergency relief. Instead, by keeping the case for herself and granting the same relief, in contrast, Justice Jackson was able to directly influence the timing in both the First Circuit and the Supreme Court, at least for now. She nudged the First Circuit (which I expect to rule by the end of the weekend, Monday at the latest); and, assuming that court rules against the Trump administration, she also tied her colleagues’ hands—by having her administrative stay expire 48 hours after the First Circuit rules. Of course, the full Court can extend the administrative stay (and Jackson can do it herself). But this way, at least, she’s putting pressure on everyone—the First Circuit and the full Court—to move very quickly in deciding whether or not Judge McConnell’s orders should be allowed to go into effect. From where I’m sitting, that’s why Justice Jackson, the most vocal critic among the justices of the Court’s behavior in Trump-related emergency applications, ruled herself here—rather than allowing the full Court to overrule her. It drastically increases the odds of the full Supreme Court resolving this…

I am pretty sure under Rule 22 that DOJ could have approached any other Justice had Justice Jackson denied the stay.
4. A Justice denying an application will note the denial thereon. Thereafter, unless action thereon is restricted by law to the Circuit Justice or is untimely under Rule 30.2, the party making an application, except in the case of an application for an extension of time, may renew it to any other Justice, subject to the provisions of this Rule. Except when the denial is without prejudice, a renewed application is not favored. Renewed application is made by a letter to the Clerk, designating the Justice to whom the application is to be directed, and accompanied by 10 copies of the original application and proof of service as required by Rule 29.
