I've not found that, so although it may be your experience I think you're mistaken to extend it to cover everyone else too.

I think it sticks in my mind like almost no other book I've read. Similarly The Mezzanine by Nicholson Baker, The Third Policeman by Flann O'Brien, and Persuasion by Jane Austen (the first of which actually fits the brief for this thread as well although the latter two decidedly do not!).
