Where, exactly, do you draw the line on experience?

For me, it makes more sense to think of consciousness as something that scales with the complexity of its host system, rather than something that magically appears out of nowhere.

Imagine a professional human saying: ‘I believe all activity in the universe is completely void of experience. Other animals? No way. Insects? Squish em. Plants? Sure, they’ve been proven to have the capacity to use principles of quantum mechanics to photosynthesize efficiently, but that’s it.’

Love the analogy. What I’m suggesting is that all the things you mentioned might have an elementary form of ‘experience.’ Sure, it sounds far-fetched for a rock, but without its minerals and subatomic particles ‘doing their thing,’ it wouldn’t have shape or even exist.
