I think ppl view having a manu rec as a golden ticket of sorts to automatically making a good product too, like noooo people’s experiences can vary wildly with the exact same manu and then someone might blame you for recommending a “bad” manu

prob has to do with the parasocial nature of a lot of merch artist audiences

like I can’t just email a business and ask them where they source everything, there’s often contracts n policies preventing that, but if a one-team artist business says no then it’s out of ~spite~

ex: ppl always ask for my sock manu. I'm happy to share w/friends (I got the rec from a friend!) but I'm not sharing with strangers bc ppl literally tell me they've never made merch before and want to try socks as their first item, and that's how you lose thousands of dollars!!! don't do that!!!!!

always hate the implication that someone not sharing a specialized manu publicly is out of spite when there's like 15 good reasons for it
