Privacy & Competition are increasingly at odds.
@epicprivacy.bsky.social wrote a blog post criticizing the French Competition Authorities' position characterizing Apple ATT as anti-competitive.

I invited Alan Butler on @monopolyreport.bsky.social
pod to share his thoughts....

Last year, Richy Glassberg wrote a great piece in @adexchanger.com that begin with "CTV advertising sucks"

Here are my thoughts of how the CTV space collectively deals with opt-out choice.

I don't think this is going away, folks.

Thought I'd tease my interview with Cory Doctorow that will come out tomorrow on TMR podcast. We talk about his book Enshittification (which you should DEF buy). This segment is a charming back and forth regarding dark patterns used in the ad space.

Everyone's moved on from the Privacy Sandbox - and lots of us are now placing our energy into agentic as we attempt to overthrow the incumbents in the ads space with a new robot army.

Is there room for privacy in this new world? Have we learned from the mistakes of the past?

@patrickmcgee.bsky.social shares a bit about his process for writing "Apple in China". There's a lesson for us regulatory folks as we try to share BIG ideas in a way that is digestible.

There's also lots of stuff about his fascinating book & Apple's stance on privacy and competition.

By 2027, browsers will be required to support GPC signals. Why only browsers - and not Mobile O/S or CTV platforms? .

It's complicated....

Google probably won't make the GPC toggle quite so prominent (as it is in my pic)... and there are lots of things taking place in the background to consider. See my substack

On this week's @monopolyreport.bsky.social pod, we continue my discussion with former Chair of the FTC, Jon Leibowitz.

In this clip, we talk about where to set the bar in terms of privacy rules - where we make the point that having FEW rules or TOO STRINGENT rules tends to favor big tech.

Antitrust law is increasingly less likely to save publishers. And all due respect to wikiHow, Google's not going to save them either....

So what will help? Collective Action and Technical Solutions.

Cloudflare's scarecrow may be part of the solution.

We interrupt today's (great) coverage of the Google trial with some developments in Europe - as the EU Commission looks to revisit certain consent requirements for digital media.

We need to go further & re-think other vestiges of last era (e.g., icons on ads).

How do we fix digital media in the EU? In my view, the answer to that question should include experimentation. I was honored to have a thoughtful discussion with @tobiasjudin.bsky.social of Norway's data protection regulator (the Datatilsynet). Norway is considering a ban on behavioral ads.
