New breast cancer treatments can extend patients’ lives, yet some remain unavailable in parts of the UK, even though people in the US and many European countries can access them.

Will the UK invest in cutting-edge therapies, or deny them to patients?

ICYMI: @torbett.bsky.social spoke to BBC Business earlier about investment in medicines.

The UK spends just 9% of the NHS budget on medicines. For most of Europe it's 14% - 20%.

This gap leaves the UK at risk of missing out on investment.

We believe it is possible to find a solution. 👇

🧵The UK is fortunate to have an excellent science base which continues to offer world-class scientific expertise and globally respected academic institutions.

It is also one of the world’s most vibrant environments for biotech and spinout companies. (1/2)
September 17, 2025 at 10:39 AM
But while investment in the UK has grown in recent years, we’re lagging behind our global peers. Other countries are making bold moves to attract more life sciences investment – and the UK risks falling behind unless action is taken. (2/3)🧵

The pharmaceutical industry invests more in R&D than any other sector – driving the discovery of new medicines and vaccines that improve health outcomes for patients and strengthen the UK economy. (1/3)🧵

Our Chief Exec @torbett.bsky.social spoke to Times Radio about medicine rebates.

The government's offer would still mean the industry paying £13 billion back to government over 3 years - 3 times more than any other European country.

We could not accept that, but hope to continue discussions.
