SS13 handles botany dependent on the server, but essentially you're playing plant genetics an can accomplish some pretty batshit stuff with enough dedication, ammonia/diethylamine, and gene splicers pulling good traits and fusing them to other plants.

Interesting. Wonder if there are conflicting design goals, because I've heard that they're trying to be unique.

Though I suppose describing 'SS14' as if it's a monolith is a mistake in the first place.

Doesn't SS14 steer away from /tg/-esc design in general? Mind you I'm not a /tg/ fan necessarily but when I play SS14 I still think /tg/ clears it by miles.

You joke, but some servers and codebases have even more jank UIs that look straight from the 90s. It's an acquired taste.

Odds are you were, it's been a problem for ages during the 2010s.

I dare give you hope. The reactionary days are *largely* behind most of the hub right now.
December 2, 2025 at 5:55 PM
The culture is better than it used to be for ol' 13!
December 2, 2025 at 5:53 PM
I concur. I've spent many a shift like that. Rarely seems to happen nowadays, though, lowest I've seen is 2 engies and a signal technician in the past month of playing on and off.

TG uses the Supermatter crystal last I checked. Monke has dynamic engines, I think- default Supermatter but constructable Tesla, Singularity, and material science scaling TEG.

I'm only a basic atmosian myself, lol, but it is very fun combining TEG and SM crystal superheated gas output.

TG is streamlined and balanced. High quality code and back-end systems there.

Monke is full of content and a bit more fun/silly in its design. Has a lot of updated older features like nanites, cloning, old engine types, etc. rather than removing them.

Depends on where you go, but I would say the community is much more tolerant and positive than it's ever been before. BYOND might be dated, but modern SS13 bases are not what you may remember- so much optimization and QoL progress has been made since.

You see for yourself! I recommend Monke or TG.
December 1, 2025 at 2:59 AM
It lets us keep developing on 13 with the hope that BYOND dying won't be the end. As a result that's a lot of culture and content continuously being made while the engine nerds are working on a different solution. SS14 is a whole different game as far as I'm concerned.
December 1, 2025 at 2:55 AM
I know Paradise code is playable for the most part on OpenDream in their testing. For now we're stuck on BYOND, but probably not forever.
December 1, 2025 at 2:53 AM
Nah, I totally get the discomfort when trying something new. SS13 right now is looking at OpenDream as the savior from what I can tell- there would be so many codebases and history lost by just abandoning BYOND as a whole. The best solution, as I understand it, is making a new engine which reads DM.
December 1, 2025 at 2:52 AM
Monke absorbed a good deal of the Yog coders and population when it shut down, you might recognize people and features there. The rest went to /tg/ IIRC.

VTM13 fork?
November 19, 2025 at 10:24 PM
You've evolved into a kangaroo? When'd this happen!
November 13, 2025 at 4:35 AM
And they don't ban gay people for kissing last time I checked lmao.
October 31, 2025 at 4:57 PM
Been a while since I poked my head in Cool, admittedly, but they're still running play tests and it's a wonderful bit of old guard Goon community.
October 31, 2025 at 4:57 PM
My decision to stick with SS13 is validated by the day. The hell?

REAL. Though granted I think that's part of the problem with pixel-based movement, not as many opportunities to really dodge and swing around corners.
October 15, 2025 at 12:41 AM
They're not even taking the good design decisions from /tg/ though, the direction they're taking things is honestly baffling. I pop into the SS14 space once every now and then and always leave disappointed.
