Pine Grosbeaks are large, about robin-sized, and rather tame. Their distribution is the entire Holarctic, from Alaska and Canada across Scandinavia and Siberia, and even into northern Japan.

Pine Grosbeaks are one of the most engrossing of the winter finches, so good luck finding some this year!

- Listen for their soft, sweet whistles.
- Scan edge habitat near conifers, especially spruce/fir.

They’ll sometimes visit platforms with sunflower seeds, although not as reliably as other finches.

Keep close eye on your local listserv/Discord server/rarity alerts because sometimes they can be around for just a little while and then move on. Keeping sunflower seeds in your feeder can bring them. They are noisy when they're around so listen!

• Check the edges of spruce stands and other conifers.

If you see any Evening Grosbeaks this winter, savor the sighting, as these finches have declined dramatically in recent decades.

Wish you both much happiness

"Bird theory" is a thing trending on other platforms like Tiktok and Instagram (but maybe not Bluesky) where you say to your partner "I saw a bird today" and based on their reaction you can know whether relationship is healthy. But obviously birders already do that so test needs to be different.
