Thanks! I am hoping it is fuzzy because of the holiday traffic. We'll see if the preview clears up later on.

Oof. The compression is horrible on this one.

Here is a link to the conception rates journal article.

The human sex ratio from conception to birth | PNAS
We describe the trajectory of the human sex ratio from conception to birth by analyzing data from (i) 3- to 6-d-old embryos, (ii) induced abortions...

At any rate, women attend college at higher rates. And my hypothesis is that women move to cities at higher rates as well. Maybe one day I will explore that idea.

I made this StoryMap about women's undergrad enrollment rates grad school.

I remember reading this a while ago, but the Google AI disagreed. The article above is over 10 years old, but the articles it sourced don't support its answer. 😐

But I digress.

Males and females are conceived at the same rate (50/50); males make up the majority of early miscarriages, whereas females make up the later ones, leading to the imbalance of 105/100 or 51%.

Why Are More Baby Boys Born Than Girls?
Does the imbalance start at conception or are there factors during pregnancy that favor the birth of slightly more males than females? Researchers find clues that point to factors in the womb.

Overall, there are more women than men in the US, but this could be due to the boomers entering the 60+ range. I need to look into the data more.
November 25, 2025 at 8:53 PM
Background: There are more boys born than girls. For every 100 girls born, 105 boys are born. Across a generation, this can lead to around a 1 mil more men than women. From age 20 to 40, men outnumber women. Then, from approx ages 40 to 60, it is roughly even. From 60 on, women outnumber men.

In Rhode Island, there are approx 20k more 20-39-year-old women than men. This effect could be due to the multiple universities in the state. I don't have overall numbers because the way the CB breaks out these number drives me crazy.

Awesome. Let me know if you run into any issues!

That's pretty impressive. I am struggling with using more than one map frame in QGIS. If I have more than one map, I tend to kick everything over to Affinity.
November 22, 2025 at 4:38 PM
This is a very cool idea! Did you do all of this in QGIS?

These mini globes are still bananas! 😮

Yep! That one was mine. And thank you, I appreciate it. I am pretty excited as well! This will be my first GeoHipster calendar. I always seemed to miss the window to buy or submit a map.

This looks phenomenal. Congrats on making the cover of the Geohipster calendar!
