Didn't care for it much the first time, as I was such a fan of the 1962 version and it just didn't have the same impact for me personally, mostly becuae I didn't think De Niro was nearly as terrifying as Robert Mitchum was.
But the second time I saw it, I appreciated it much more on its own.

Well, that might also still track as faking empathy does not exactly seem to have been his usual preferred behaviour to start with.
But I do think he has/had some innate sense of what was going too far which would make people recognise the true sociopath inside and no longer do his bidding.
