Watching the classic 1952 series The Adventures of Superman starring George Reeves and Phyllis Coates/Noel Neill.

What holds up? What doesn't? Is there a cool robot (yes) We'll see!

Refugee from Krypton/Twitter.
HECK YEAH. Hook this to my veins! Great episode.

Supes bursts through the electric chair room to stop the current with his bare hands.

Superman doesn't even show up until 4 minutes before the end of the episode, speeding to get the governor to sign the pardon.

Which is great cause that's ALSO the plot of Action Comics 1, getting a pardon for someone on death row.

THIS is the stuff this series does better than anything coming after.

The whole Planet staff gets on doing research and interviews the sting the crap out of the contractor.

This whole episode is about journalistic intrigue and I am HERE FOR IT.

He covers up quick I guess.

Lois says that was one of the the bravest things she'd ever seen and, looking at her from TWO FEET away with no glasses on he says "You mean... like something Superman would do?" and she does NOT pick this up.

He's just trying to get caught at this point.

The subtlest way Clark can think of to dispose of the bomb is to DIVE OUT OF THE MOVING CAR AND GET BLOWN UP?

How're we explaining this one to Lois, my dude?
April 28, 2025 at 9:30 PM
He plants a bomb, which Clark spots using a really fun practical effect. So simple and so great.

So the evil contractor finds out they're investigating and sends a hitman to stop them, and his whole plan is to hitchhike and get them to pick him up, which they just do I guess?
April 28, 2025 at 9:28 PM
Anyway, they believe him and offer to help clear his name, but he thinks it's too late.

"I'm afraid even Superman couldn't do much for me now."

Clark:

Turns out he was set up for safety inspecting a sketchy construction company, and they got into a fight over who is the best Indiana Jones cosplayer probably.
April 28, 2025 at 9:25 PM
Trick is he didn't do it, which Clark verifies by VERY SUBTLY checking his pulse as he tells them the real story.
April 28, 2025 at 9:23 PM
Lois and Clark are offering Joe Winters, a convicted murderer about to be executed, $10,000 for his family if he tells the planet his story.

Yikes.
April 28, 2025 at 9:22 PM
I wonder where we're headed to this ti- uh... oh.
April 28, 2025 at 9:21 PM
Phyllis Coates continued a successful career after Superman, but like Neill, came back to play Lois's mom. This time in Lois and Clark.
April 28, 2025 at 9:18 PM
So she understood the assignment.

She kept understanding it too, appearing once again across from Kirk Alyn as Lois's parents in Reeve's Superman: The Movie.
April 28, 2025 at 9:17 PM
So who do you replace tv's first Lois Lane with? Why, the movies' first Lois Lane. Noel Neill had already played the role across from Kirk Alyn in the serials.
April 28, 2025 at 9:16 PM
She also said it wasn't exactly an easy show to film, frequently coming close to getting her blown up, drowned or set on fire.

Remember that slug in episode 6? Apparently she missed her mark and got punched for real. Ow.

1.16. "I'll get it. It's probably for me." - Clark Kent answering the phone in Lois's office. #patriarchy
April 20, 2025 at 1:31 PM
1.24. But OH SNAP he was just playing possum so that the secret mob boss would show up to gloat!

He mops the floor with 'em and then turns them in to... Perry White (?).
April 20, 2025 at 1:30 PM
24. Whatever, they lure him into this awesome Jack Kirby-looking room that blasts him with electricity until he dies.

That's a good time.
April 20, 2025 at 1:29 PM
1.24. And this never comes up again. They never tell Clark they know who he is, and they never leverage it against him.

Maybe they didn't want to end up dead on a mountain somewhere, but why waste time with this plot if it was going nowhere?

This is so weird you guys.
April 20, 2025 at 1:29 PM
1.24. So the mob now knows that Superman is Clark Kent and their whole plan is that now they can call Clark to lure Superman to their trap.

That's it. They already know Supes was working with the Planet, they could've called Perry White. But no, this was all about who specifically to call.
April 20, 2025 at 1:28 PM
1.24. Anyway, it totally pays off, because holy crap, Clark just dashes into an ally in front of the loudest camera known to humanity and changes into Superman. Oops.
