It was great to connect with Baroness Ruth Lister, @refugeeaction.bsky.social, Lush, @asylummatters.bsky.social, and many others working tirelessly to make change happen.

We know the journey ahead is going to be challenging, but together, we can #LiftTheBan!

Giving people seeking safety the right to work makes sense. It would:

✅ Boost wellbeing and dignity
✅ Allow people to use their skills and experiences
✅ Benefit the UK economy and our communities

It's time to #LiftTheBan.

As a result of being banned from working:

❌ Women are turning to sex work;
❌ Women are forced into exploitative and dangerous situations, becoming more vulnerable to sexual violence.

We were particularly proud to hear Baroness Lister speak about our research, #SafetyAndSurvival, and the impact of the work ban on women seeking asylum:

❌ Women are being forced to enter and stay in unwanted or abusive relationships as a result of the work ban

A huge thank you to all who attended!

The packed out room was full of solidarity, resistance, and courage.

As Memory shared, “I am hopeful about the future because of people like you.”

Together we organise and together we rise! ✊

As Memory said, “We can’t stop the far-right by emulating the policies of the right.”

The Government needs the moral courage to call out racism and to pursue policies of justice, compassion and kindness, instead of trying to appease racism, xenophobia and hatred.

Keep your eyes peeled over the #16DaysOfActivism to learn more about our work and how you can get involved to create change.

We can’t end violence against women unless we’re fighting for ALL women.✊

Today and every day, we say it loud and we say it clear: refugees are welcome here!

This is shameful.

Any Government serious about tackling violence against women and girls must include ALL women, including those seeking safety here.

Failure to do so would create a two-tier system where refugee women are treated as less-deserving and left behind.

3/🧵
November 25, 2025 at 9:25 AM
The majority of women seeking safety in the UK are survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.

Yet the asylum system in the UK harms rather than protects.

Hostile policies, such as enforced poverty and destitution, place women at risk of further violence, abuse, or exploitation.

It isn't too late.

It's time for people everywhere to say #NotInOurName!

After all, it is what any one of us would want if faced with the impossible decision to flee to save our lives.

Maryam, a refugee woman in our network shared:

🗣️ "This change makes me feel like I will never truly be welcome, that I will always be viewed as a 'refugee' and not as a member of society like everybody else."

The Government should be ashamed.

This is a very dangerous step in the wrong direction.

Human rights are not conditional.

When we allow for them to dismantled for some, we endanger them for all.

These plans are morally and ethically bankrupt.

It is a cheap attack on people seeking safety.

These plans send the message that:
❌ Protection is temporary
❌ That people with refugee status will never be welcome here
