incredible innovation in taking bribes: "no, this bribe was just a donation to pay a trivial amount of government salaries, the approval of my unrelated merger is a coincidence"

arguably your 10 year horizon just makes this problem worse by kicking the can until the tax bill is larger, requiring larger alternate sources of funds. easier to not sell and drum up funds for a small tax bill every year than a giant one all at once

You can see that in Canada already with deemed gains on death. Headline recently about inheriting a cottage from parents, complaining about the tax they had to pay being so large (since they chose not to sell the property which would make the tax easy to pay)

ah, that is not the liquidity problem I have ever thought of as the main problem with taxing unrealized gains. the liquidity problem is that, by definition, they have not sold the asset. So they need some other source of funds to pay the tax. And they will be mad if they are forced to sell the asset

October 24, 2025 at 4:55 PM
no? what's your thinking, that people will act like rational accountants and project likely gains and then save a target amount for the tax hit?

unironically this has actually been the way corproate types use AI since before LLMs. it was unfortunate but workable until LLMs totally muddied the water and rendered it impossible to know what someone means by AI
