My latest ignorant question. Are preemptive (before conviction) pardons legal? Nixon was a precedent but I saw a law review article (never found it again) suggesting that if anyone had challenged it in court it might have failed. Hmm, the Vietnam draft dodgers were another.

Here's the violence I'm afraid of. Even if it's natural causes in a hospital with witnesses and an autopsy there will be outraged conspiracy theories. The nuts might lash out physically.
